It was in 2000, just as the dotcom bubble was bursting, that Richard and Kendall decided to launch Flatspin.
To family and friends it may not have seemed the wisest of moves, but Richard was back in South Africa after many years of travelling and, having just hooked up with his old friend Kendall, was ready for more adventure.
The two of them plunged into the World Wide Web and were soon producing the trademark websites and content management interfaces for which Flatspin has become famous.
But producing functional and elegant websites is one thing. Richard and Kendall soon realised that in order to stay on top of the game they were going to need a real coding guru. Enter Craig... another childhood friend who, by coincidence, had been making a name for himself as a top-level programmer in Cape Town and London. Craig became Flatspin’s third partner in 2002 and has been cracking new concepts and codes ever since.
After starting out from a room in Rosie Shapiro’s friendly mansion, Flatspin acquired its current HQ a few doors up in Woodstock’s vibey Roodebloem Road. A beautiful Victorian cottage with gleaming wooden floors and high ceilings, this has become Flatspin’s work sanctuary.
Flatspin’s philosophy towards its clients has from the outset been based on sincerity, trust and a willingness to build lasting relationships together. Over the six years since Flatspin first opened its doors, many clients have become firm friends and vocal ambassadors for Flatspin and the personal, efficient way in which its dynamic team serves its clients.
Many people have asked “Why Flatspin?!” and the answer is really quite simple… Richard’s first business was as a surfboard shaper (with the same Agent Andrew who later diverged into coffee). Although Flatspin Surfboards was a lot of fun, it wasn’t exactly headed for the stock exchange...
Many years later, when Richard and Kendall needed a name for their new online business venture, Flatspin Web Solutions headed the list. It was a vibey name that was already famous amongst their childhood crew. Little did they dream how well known it was to become!
